The classic 6-foot workbench is the most popular plan. Built from 2x4 and 2x6 lumber with a 18mm MDF or plywood top, this bench provides a solid work surface and can be completed in one weekend. The design includes a lower shelf for storage and optional drawers.
For small spaces, folding workbench plans mount to a wall and fold flat when not in use. These are perfect for garages that double as parking spaces or for apartment balconies. Despite folding, these benches support up to 100kg when deployed.
Cabinetmaker's workbenches represent the ultimate workshop project. Featuring a thick hardwood top, front and end vises, bench dogs, and a tail vise, these benches are furniture-grade pieces that last a lifetime. The plans include detailed instructions for flattening the top and installing vise hardware.
Minimum 18mm plywood or MDF for light work. 36-50mm solid wood or laminated lumber for general woodworking. 75mm+ for heavy-duty workbenches used for hand tool work and chopping.
For hand tool woodworking, the top should be at wrist height when standing. This is typically 850-900mm. For assembly and power tool work, a lower bench of 750-800mm is more comfortable. Some woodworkers build two benches at different heights.
A front vice is highly recommended for holding boards for planing, sawing, and chiselling. A tail vice with bench dogs allows you to hold work flat on the bench surface. Both can be added later as budget allows.
